Chandigarh, October 9, 2024: Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Centre, Panjab University (PU) today organised a special lecture on ‘Justice and the Search for Just Society’.
Member of UGC, Govt. of India and former Vice Chancellor, Central University of Odisha, Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty addressed the special lecture.
Earlier, Prof. Navjot Coordinator of the Centre welcomed Prof. Mohanty.
The lecture was chaired by Prof. Emanual Nahar, Department of Political Science, CDOE, a former Chairman of Minority Commission Punjab.
In his lecture, Professor Mohanty discussed the defining features and requisites for a just society. He stated that in tracing mankind’s evolution from barbarism to civilisation, one can see that justice or what is popularly known as the rule of law, comprising a set of publically verifiable norms, legal in character, meant to govern our individual and collective life, has enabled us to go beyond ‘the State of Nature’ what the philosopher Thomas Hobbes famously described as ‘poor, nasty, brutish and short’.
While outlining some of the major trajectories of Justice in the cross-cultural context, Prof Mohanty argued that Justice needs to undergo a radical volte-face and embrace an evolving and wholesome view of human life to find its mission in the world.
Professor Nahar elaborated on the concept of a just society perceived by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar in his writing and speeches. He also highlighted the contribution of the Ambedkar Centre to fulfil the vision of a just society in India.
The lecture was well attended by the Students, Research Scholars and Faculty members of different departments.
