The lecture featured presentations by Prof. Ronki Ram (Chair Professor Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chair) and Dr. Sarbjeet Singh Mukhiya from the Punjabi Department. Prof. Parmjit Kaur, Chairperson, Guru Ravidas Chair introduced the speakers and emphasized the practical aspects of Guru Ravidas Ji’s life. She highlighted that Guru Ravidas Ji’s teachings serve as a guiding light for humanity. Notably, during his time, the presence of Rani Jhalan and Meera Bai in the Satsang exemplified the spirit of that era. Dr. Sarbjit Singh discussed Guru  Ravidas Ji’s close ties with Punjab and gave references to Guru Ravidas Ji’s Bani found in The Guru Granth Sahib and other texts. He also hinted at Guru Ravidas’s political consciousness, emphasizing his desire for an egalitarian society, symbolized by his vision of Begumpura.

Alongside, Prof. Ronki Ram noted that the rise of the Bhakti movement brought about new perspectives, and The Guru Granth Sahib emerged as a significant document of that time’s Bhakti movement. Guru Ravidas made his occupation, which involved making shoes, a form of religious practice, thereby renouncing materialism and worldly divisions. Therefore, his life experiences and Bani are integral to understanding his philosophy as a whole.
