A special lecture on “Lu Xun and his contributions” was held today in the department. This lecture was delivered by Prof. Damodar Panda, Academic In-charge of the Department and Professor of Chinese Language & Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Chandigarh, March 11, 2025: A special lecture on “Lu Xun and his contributions” was held today in the department. This lecture was delivered by Prof. Damodar Panda, Academic In-charge of the Department and Professor of Chinese Language & Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

In his lecture, he dealt in detail Lu Xun’s contributions for which Chairman Mao Zedong called him ‘Commander of Chinese Cultural Revolution’. He was the greatest essayist and short story writer in Modern Chinese Literature, who through his revolutionary writings tried to eliminate/eradicate the human degradation, de-generation, corruption and the plight of the Chinese people during his time. He used modern colloquial/vernacular Chinese language, not classical language. 

In his writings, to awaken the people particularly youth to speak up and fight for a new society with a new identity in China. He wrote articles and stories in New Youth, the famous journal published by Chen Duxiu during May 4th Movement, 1919, criticizing the ills of the society and governance of the time. Truly, his writings prove, writer’s language is the language of the society. His writing-‘The True Story of Ah Q’ stands out in depicting the prevailing problems of Chinese society. 

The lecture was well attended and there was a thorough discussion on the lecture.
