The Department of History in collaboration with Dr B R Ambedkar Centre organized a special lecture on Sikh Art delivered by Professor Gurinder Singh Mann, Former Professor of Sikh Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara and Director of Global Institute of Sikh Studies on Friday.

Chandigarh, February 23, 2024: The Department of History in collaboration with Dr B R Ambedkar Centre organized a special lecture on Sikh Art delivered by Professor Gurinder Singh Mann, Former Professor of Sikh Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara and Director of Global Institute of Sikh Studies on Friday.

Introducing the field of Sikh Art, Professor Mann pointed out that sources like narratives of Sikh art, catalogues of exhibitions, and museums tell us about its history, nature of its specificity, shifts in it over time from water colours to paint and paper to canvas. He underlined that priority should be given to primary sources as the base of current scholarly writings need expanding. Visuals of illustrated manuscripts were used to highlight, that study of minute details help in refining narrative of Sikh history.

Professor Mann concluded by saying that Sikh art as a field needs development and its contribution to Sikh history is yet to be adequately addressed.
