Special lectures on “The Digital Transition" and "Media and Information Literacy"

Chandigarh, October 1, 2024: The Department of Library & Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh on the occasion of University foundation day, successfully organized two special lectures on "The Digital Transition" and "Media and Information Literacy".
The lectures are delivered by Prof. Harinder Pal Singh Kalra, Professor in the Department of Library and Information Science at Punjabi University, Patiala.
At the beginning of the session, the Chairperson of the department, Prof. Rupak Chakravarty, introduced the achievements of Prof. Harinder Pal Singh Kalra. During the lecture, Prof. Kalra discussed the distinction between libraries and the Internet, emphasising that libraries serve as authentic sources of information. He also addressed the impact of the Internet on the diversity of languages, the "Googlization of the mindset," privacy and security concerns regarding data and information, and the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating deepfakes in the form of audio and video. He cautioned the audience about the dangers of misinformation and deepfakes.
Additionally, Prof. Kalra mentioned the IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations) Guidelines for spotting fake news, urging everyone to be vigilant and not to be easily influenced by misleading information. The session, marked by an impressive turnout, successfully raised awareness and engaged students in understanding how to use the internet and media wisely. Session ended with the questions and answer session.
