Special on World Sjogren’s Day
Dr Vikas Gupta Assistant Professor, Department of Rheumatology & Immunology, DMCH, Ludhiana says with proper treatment, patients can lead a normal and healthy life
Ludhiana: Every year 23rd July is observed as World Sjogren’s Day to raise awareness about this disease. The date marks the birthday of the Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Sjogren who described this condition. Sjogren Syndrome is an autoimmune disease in which patients usually complain of dryness or gritty sensation in the eyes. They may also complain of dryness of mouth and skin. Patients may also develop dental caries or skin rashes as a result of this disease. Some patients also have joint pain and/or swelling and a few may complain of fatigue which can be severe at times. People may also complain of “pain all over” the body. Other problems like anxiety, depression and difficulty falling asleep may coexist. Rarely, the disease can affect internal organs like lung, liver, brain or kidneys. It is important to recognise this condition and see a rheumatologist for proper management of this condition. With proper treatment, patients can lead a normal and healthy life, said Dr Vikas Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Rheumatology & Immunology, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana.
