Central University of Punjab organizes a special program to raise awareness about mental health and drug addiction in commemoration of Brain Awareness Week
Bathinda, April 25: The NeuroCAD Lab at the Department of Human Genetics and Molecular Medicine, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, recently hosted a two-day event in celebration of 'Brain Awareness Week', generously sponsored by the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) and the DANA Foundation. Under the esteemed patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, the program aimed to promote understanding of brain functioning, mental health, and the impact of drug addiction.
The first day featured a range of engaging activities, including a poster-making competition, an expert lecture session by Dr. Jawahar Singh (Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, AIIMS Bathinda) and Dr. Jeyaval S. (Head of the Department of Psychology, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda), a brain quiz, and a street play (Nukkad Natak) highlighting mental health issues and factors contributing to drug addiction. These sessions underscored the critical role of mental well-being in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
On the second day, the program extended its outreach to Government Senior Secondary Smart School (G.S.S.S.), Jhumba, Bathinda. Expert talks were delivered by Dr. Sameer (Assistant Professor, Department of Hindi, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda) and Ms. Jasleen Kaur (Clinical Psychologist), focusing on the concerning trends of deteriorating mental health and increasing substance abuse among students. A highlight of the day was the presentation of models illustrating brain anatomy and the effects of drugs on cognitive functions, capturing the interest of attendees.
More than 100 students actively participated in competitions, with winners recognized and awarded trophies. Kulwinder Kaur, Principal of G.S.S.S. School, Jhumba, Bathinda, shared valuable insights on drug addiction issues and preventive strategies. Dr. Jawahar Singh and Dr. Sameer led discussions emphasizing the importance of collective action against drug addiction.
The event was meticulously coordinated by Dr. Suryanaryan Biswal and Dr. Ujjawal, supported by a dedicated team of over 40 volunteers, ensuring its success and lasting impact in promoting brain awareness and mental health education.
