Chandigarh, January 16, 2024: The Dept-cum-Centre for Women’ studies and Development, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a special talk cum interaction session with Sumail who is an economic geologist, in the Centre for Exploration Targeting, School of Earth Sciences, University of Western Australia.
Sumail who recently submitted his Ph.D thesis entitled ‘Unravelling the plyphased nature of gold mineralization in Orogenic Gold Deposits: A Study of the High Grade Jundee-Bogoda Gold camp’ shared his experiences as a Masters student and as a Ph.D candidate in University of Western Australia with the faculty, research scholars and students. During his Ph.D which was fully funded, he received two scholarships, one which paid his fees and second which paid him to do his pP.D. “ I did not take any exam during my entire masters course” stated Sumail, because all the evaluations were done on the basis of assignments which were rigorously checked for plagiarism and if any plagiarism was detected, it meant that the student has failed. During the course of his Ph.D, he stated that he made at least 15 presentations annually. In simplified terms he informed the participants that the focus of his research was on locating gold deposits and on discovering why there was a difference in the amount of gold deposits at different sites. The rocks which he is studying were about 2.6 billion years old meaning that the gold deposited therein was also that old. He also shed light on how research is conducted and guided the research scholars about the ways in which to conduct better and more relevant research.
