Chandigarh, October 16, 2024: "Srimanta Sankardev was a great saint-scholar, poet, playwright, dancer, actor, musician, artist social-religious reformer and the most prominent figure in the cultural and religious history of the Bhakti movement in Assam", said first Visiting Chair Professor of Srimanta Sankardev Chair at Panjab University, Prof Dayanand Pathak at Panjab University, Chandigarh, today.
Prof. Pathak was delivering a lecture on “The Life and legacy of Srimanta Sankardev and His Idea of Human Excellence” at Seminar Hall, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, PU, today. The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh had organised a Special Lecture on “The Life of Srimanta Sankardev& His Idea of Human Excellence” in collaboration with Srimanta Sankardev Chair.
Addressing the students, Professor Pathak illuminated Sankardev’s profound contributions as a saint-scholar and cultural reformer. His teaching on unity, social equality and the pursuit of excellence resonate deeply in our contemporary society. He motivated us to carry forward his legacy of compassion and enlightenment fostering a community embodies these values, he added.
Prof. Pathak said that all the literary works of Sankardev carry a message for human kind at large. For him, religion as we understand in insular perspective, was only a part of that totality. He was searching for sublimity in human thoughts and expressions in diverse forms- literary, social, cultural and other areas of life, he further added.
Coordinator of PU Srimanta Sankardev Chair Prof. Yojna Rawat, informed that the Chair is organising two week long activities in PU campus for which resource persons and scholars of Srimanta Sankardev studies have been invited from Assam and other parts of the country. The various activities under the Chair will continue till October 18, 2024. An audio visual presentation, seven extension lectures by visiting Chair Professor Dr. Dayanand Pathak, a National Seminar on Srimanta Sankardev and a Sattriya Dance performance are being organized to commemorate 576th Birth Anniversary of Srimanta Sankardev, she added.
