Chandigarh, October 29, 2024: “Stroke, the ‘Brain attack’ is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. It is a medical emergency of highest grade that can have life altering consequences if not detected and treated promptly.”
Speaking on the World Stroke Day today, Dr Sandeep Moudgil senior consultant interventional radiology at Max Super Specialilty Hospital Mohali said that identifying a stroke in time can make a significant difference in the patient's outcome. Swift medical intervention can limit brain damage, improve recovery chances, and reduce long-term disability.
“In ischemic conditions the brain loses 20 lakh neurons (the brain-cells) every minute. It is a medical emergency of highest grade and patient needs to be taken to the hospital well-equipped for handling acute stroke,”
Ironically India faces a significant stroke burden, with the disease being the fourth leading cause of death and the fifth leading cause of disability, he pointed out.
“According to the Global Burden of Disease Study, stroke accounted for over 6.6 million deaths and 143 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) globally in 2019. In India, the incidence of stroke varies widely across states, influenced by factors such as healthcare access, public awareness, and socioeconomic conditions,”
Awareness of the signs and symptoms is crucial in minimizing the impact of stroke and increasing the chances of recovery, Dr Sandeep Moudgil maintained.
It is more serious than heart attack and demands the same or higher level of awareness to offer best possible recovery, he elaborated.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial in reducing the risk of stroke and other health issues, he maintained.
