Students of Centre for Human Rights and Duties, PU Visited ‘Sutra’ an NGO Empowering Rural Women in Himachal Pradesh
Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University today organised a field exposure one-day visit to SUTRA(Social Uplift Through Rural Action), an NGO empowering rural woman through training programs, advocacy and transformative change initiatives at Kasauli in District Solan (Himachal Pradesh).
Chandigarh, February 11, 2025: Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University today organised a field exposure one-day visit to SUTRA(Social Uplift Through Rural Action), an NGO empowering rural woman through training programs, advocacy and transformative change initiatives at Kasauli in District Solan (Himachal Pradesh).
A team of 30 Masters’ students and research scholars were accompanied by Dr. Kanika Sharma, Guest Faculty & Dr. Manjulla Verma, Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Centre for Human Rights and Duties.
The NGO was founded by Subhash Mendhapurkar in 1977. The visit comprised of interactive sessions with Ms. Nirmal, administrator cum coordinator & Ms. Thapa, lead field investigator in SUTRA.
A presentation showcasing the origin, diverse initiatives taken up the NGO as well as its role in the milestone Himachal Pradesh project ‘Ekal Naari Program’ spearheaded by SUTRA was shown to the students. The students were further taken for practical intervention at the SUTRA supervised Anganwadi Centre, for a deeper study of auditing social schemes and efficacy at grassroot rural levels.
Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Prof. Namita Gupta informed that the visit was a part of important practical curriculum segment comprising field visit interventions for developing human rights advocacy skills among the students.
