Taking care of elderly during Covid times, advises DMCH Doc

Ludhiana: In present scenario of wide spread COVID pandemic, it is important that elderly people (especially above 60 years of age) should be taken proper care, advises Dr Dinesh Jain (Professor of Medicine, DMCH)
According to Dr Dinesh Jain, senior citizens are susceptible of having weak immunity with advancing years so it is strongly advisable that ‘caregivers’ for such people should adopt certain measures if the senior citizen displays symptoms like fever, with or without body ache, new onset of symptoms, continuous cough, shortness of breath, unusually poor appetite and inability to eat.

In such cases, DOs for caregivers include:
 Wash hands before helping the older individual
 Cover your face properly with mask while attending on the senior citizen
 Clean surfaces of walking cane, walker, wheelchair, bedpan etc which are frequently used.
 Assist the older individual and help him/her in washing hands
 Ensure proper food and water intake by senior citizens
 Monitor his/her health

At the same time, it is advisable for ‘Senior Citizens’ not to keep themselves aloof and always confine them to their room. They easily can have interaction with other family members by adopting proper COVID related precautions. To keep their mental well being in better shape, they can rediscover old hobbies like painting, reading and listening to music.
Ensure proper nutrition through home cooked food, fresh meals, hydrate frequently, take fresh juices and adequate amount of water to boost immunity.
