PU Department of Education Celebrates Birth Anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh with Talk-cum-Interaction on “Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s Idea of Freedom”
Chandigarh, September 27, 2024: The Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh, celebrated the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh by organising a Talk-cum-Interaction session to reflect upon and honour his enduring legacy and vision of freedom.
The Talk-cum-Interaction session took place in the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Hall, Arts Block-2 to delve into the revolutionary ideas of one of India’s most iconic freedom fighters. Large number of students, faculty members, and esteemed guests participated in the function.
Professor Satvinderpal Kaur, Chairperson of the Department of Education, welcomed the guest speaker, Professor Ishwar Dyal Gaur, a renowned historian and retired professor from Panjab University. As a gesture of appreciation, Professor Kuldeep Kaur also presented a planter to Professor Gaur symbolising the department’s respect for his invaluable contribution to the session.
In this lecture, Professor Gaur elaborated on Bhagat Singh’s vision of freedom, emphasising lifelong learning and the importance of continuous intellectual growth. He highlighted three key attributes for social transformation—senses, imagination, and cognition—and encouraged critical thinking. Gaur distinguished between "conditioned" and "unconditioned" freedom, quoting figures like Guru Nanak, Gandhi, Marx, and Plato. He also highlighted Bhagat Singh’s readiness for sacrifice, symbolised deeply moving the audience. The session ended with a thoughtful Question and Answer session, where Gaur stressed the importance of reading for deeper insight into freedom and society.
The event ended on a reflective note, with everyone present feeling inspired to engage with the revolutionary ideas of Bhagat Singh in their academic and personal lives.
