“Tangled Threads” — UIFT&VD Students Present Sustainable Art Installation at Sector 17 Underpass on World Art Day

Chandigarh, April 21, 2025: On the occasion of World Art Day, the students of the University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT&VD), Panjab University, Chandigarh, unveiled a thought-provoking and sustainable art installation titled “Tangled Threads” at the Sector 17 underpass, in collaboration with the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi.
“Tangled Threads” symbolically wove together the worlds of fashion and art, reflecting the deep, creative entanglement between the two disciplines. Just as fashion tells stories through fabric, texture, and silhouette, this installation used discarded materials to narrate a tale of beauty, sustainability, and transformation. It was a tribute to how design can transcend function and become a powerful visual language.

The installation featured the striking image of a beautiful girl with long, flowing curly hair, gradually transforming into colourful braids adorned with traditional parandas. This stunning 3D visual effect was created entirely from waste and discarded fabrics, turning everyday textile scraps into an extraordinary work of public art.

Enhancing the scene, students crafted delicate flowers from waste fabric, which were used as symbolic elements of renewal and growth. A miniature sewing machine was included as a nod to the craft of fashion creation, placed to appear as though it was actively bringing the fabric to life. Adding a touch of whimsy and harmony with nature, small birds perched on the braids as if chirping softly gave the piece an almost poetic presence.

This creative initiative was mentored and guided by Dr. Prabhdip Brar, Chairperson UIFT & VD and Ms. Kirti Sheoran (Guest Faculty) whose constant support and insightful direction played a vital role in bringing the vision of “Tangled Threads” to life. Their encouragement empowered the students to explore the convergence of fashion and artistic expression through the lens of sustainability.

The participating students Ardas Kaur, Sapna Dhiman, Vinita Bisht, Kanita Kumari, and Mandip Kaur poured heart and soul into the conceptualisation and execution of this immersive installation. Their teamwork and dedication transformed the underpass into a vibrant, reflective space where fashion met fine art with purpose and passion.

“Tangled Threads” stood as a bold reminder of the potential for discarded materials to become carriers of culture and emotion. It beautifully aligned with the essence of World Art Day celebrating not just creativity, but also responsibility, community, and the transformative power of artistic vision.
