Medal winner of Sailing Team Telangana from the Yacht Club of Hyderabad wins 5 medals at the Nationals and 5 at the Intrnational including 2 Golds and 2 Silver with Coach Suheim Sheikh.

Hyderabad, January 10, 2019: Telangana Sailors made big by winning record number of medals at just concluded Sailing Youth Nationals and the India International Regatta 2019 held at Chennai.

They won 2 golds, 2 Silvers and 6 Bronzes. They smashed all state records and crafted history by grabbing a lion’s share of the medals.

Land locked Telangana State fielded 59 entries in a total fleet size of 150 entries at the championships and won 10 medals .

The two Bronzes were won at the India International where 12 countries participated. The bronze medals won by both boys and girls who include Jaikiran Bolli and Mahboobie Tungara.

Sweden clinched Gold in both Boys and Girls and India’s Vijay Sabavath and Rithika Dangi from Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh clinching the silvers.

Jaikiran Bolli , a Swearoe from the Social Welfare Schools of Telangana chose to defend his bronze rather than try for a Gold which was within striking distance but safer judgement prevailed and he did not risk an attack on Gold at the final day medal race. Mahboobie of Marredpally Government School had a confirmed silver well before the final medal race.

Mahboobie could have hit gold but sadly received a black flag disqualification in the penultimate race dashing all hopes for a Gold or Silver and had to settle for a Bronze in her last ever appearance at a Sub Junior Regatta. She moves to the Olympic Class Laser this year.

The stars of the junior fleet were Ravali Parandi and Vaishnavi Veeravamsham both of Udbhav School , Rasoolpura and sailing at the Yacht Club with two Golds and two Silvers respectively at the Nationals and the International in the Junior Fleet.

“Ravali was not even a favourite before the Nationals and was seeded well below 7th in the Telangana fleet. With the 2 meter swell and winds and current we did not expect this dimunitive 12 year old of just 29 Kgs to strike Gold but she sailed a stupendous two regattas clinching the girls gold in both and the overall winner at the International. with 7 first positions beating many experienced sailors” said Suheim Sheikh her Coach.

Vaishnavi was a close second in both regattas clinching two silvers and Sanya Jabeen of TEMREIS finished with a Bronze at the International , her first medal.

Sanya Jabeen of the Telangana Minorities Residential Schools (TEMRIES) clinched a Girls Bronze at Sailing International making this her first medal at an International as she moves into the Olympic Laser Class boat next year.

Gautam Kankatla also earned a Bronze Medal and Rishab Nayar of YCH who dropped by from Purdue University where he is studying Aeronautical Engineering got a Bronze in the Radial Fleet.

“What makes me super proud is that 5 of our students and one from TEMREIS are now ranked in the top 10 Boys in the National Fleet. Thanks to the hard work of The Yacht Club of Hyderabad Telangana is making great strides in the sport of Sailing. Even the National Champion Vijay Sabavath is an ex sailor of YCH and a student of our Social Welfare Schools and his admission to the Army at Bangalore was facilitated by YCH” , said Dr.RS Praveen Kumar of the Telangana Residential Schools

Telangana is by far the largest sailing state in the country now and growing by leaps and bounds with more than a hundred sailors under training at the Yacht Club of Hyderabad at Hussain Sagar
