Tewari asks lawyers to resist NPR
Says, it will ultimately lead to NRC
Nawanshahar: Sri Anandpur Sahib MP Manish Tewari has urged the legal fraternity to resist and fight against the National Population Register (NPR) as it will ultimately lead to the National Register for Citizens (NRC). He said, the very purpose of NRC is divisive and it will be difficult for ordinary people to prove their citizenship.
Addressing the lawyers here on Saturday at a function organized by the District Bar Association, the MP said, every conscientious citizen of the country should oppose the NPR and NRC. He said, once the government goes ahead with the NRC, it will be difficult for majority of the ordinary citizens of the country to prove that they actually belong to this country.
“Their aim is to snatch away our citizenship and question our very existence in this country”, he cautioned, while adding that the legal community was best equipped to challenge and fight this divisive law that is threatening to break the social fabric of the country.
Tewari hailed the Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh in taking the lead in opposing the NPR. He pointed out, the Punjab government had already made it categorically clear that there will be no NPR in Punjab and only the normal and routine census will be carried out.
On the occasion V S pahwa president bar association Nawanshair, MLA Angad singh, MLA Ch.Darshan lal mangupur, Satbir singh Palijikki Chairrman Distt Planing board, Pawan Dewan Chairrman Punjab Large industrial Development Board, Dr Harpreet Kainth , Rana Kuldeep and others were also present.
