The 15th edition of the Monsoon Regatta to start on July 15
The Monsoon Regatta run by the Telangana Sailing Association and The Yacht Club of Hyderabad at Hussain Sagar is the longest-running junior national regatta in India without a break for 15 years since 2009. The prestigious Monsoon Regatta Trophy for the winner and the SH Babu Memorial Trophy for the most consistent sailor at this National Ranking Championship are up for grabs.
Hyderabad, July 14, 2024: The Monsoon Regatta run by the Telangana Sailing Association and The Yacht Club of Hyderabad at Hussain Sagar is the longest-running junior national regatta in India without a break for 15 years since 2009. The prestigious Monsoon Regatta Trophy for the winner and the SH Babu Memorial Trophy for the most consistent sailor at this National Ranking Championship are up for grabs.
This year the Monsoon Regatta will host a record 140 sailors from Tamilnadu, Madhya Pradesh, Mysore, Orissa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. while close to 40 percent of the fleet is from the host state of Telangana.
Sarfaraz Ahmad, IAS, will preside over the prize giving as Chief Guest on 20th July at 4 PM.
This year, three new under-18 Classes of boats are added, ILCA4, 29er, and International 420. "During the last few years, Telangana dominated the 470 class with Preethi Kongara heading for the Asian Games 2023. We thought introducing the International 420 as a transition class would be beneficial for the future," said Suheim Sheikh the President of the Telangana Sailing Association.
In the under-16 Optimist Class, local Telangana girl Deekshita Komaravelly is the top seed to watch out for closely followed by Shreya Krishna from Tamilnadu. Govardhan Pallara will lead the boys having won the Nationals at Shillong.
In the under-18 Laser Class, it's a tight toss-up between MP and Goa while in the under-19 Mixed Classes, it is dominated by top seeds from Telangana Vaishnavi Veeravamsham and crew Shravan Kathravath.
The Under 18 girls is a tight race between Somya Singh of Bhopal and Alia Sabreen of Orissa and in boys, Yuvraj Yadav of Goa and Shashank Batham of Bhopal are top seeds.
In the 29er Skiffs, it is a tight race between Madhya Pradesh and Goa represented by sailors from INS Mandovi.
An International Jury comprising International Judges from Thailand, Australia, Hongkong, and India will be presiding over the regatta chaired by Rut Subniram of Thailand.
The Race Management will be headed by Shrikant Chaturvedi and the International Rece Officer.
