The outfit gives me the confidence to be the powerful woman that Kadru is: Parul Chauhan aka Kadru on Sony SAB’s Dharm Yoddha Garud
‘Evil is bad that believes it’s good!’ And to make the evil look so good is an uphill task for the costume design team, often the unsung hero of any media production. While in regular settings it’s easy to miss the importance of the right costume, when it comes to certain genres such as historical fiction, fantasy or mythological TV shows, costume design becomes one of the key narrative elements of the story being told. Sony SAB’s Dharam Yoddha Garud understand this only too well. Hence, while designing the costume for the antagonist queen Kadru, the production team put in a lot of thought to ensure her look didn’t just stand out, but also established her character traits in the most stunning manner.
The outfit, made with silk and brocade, in the most gorgeous shade of purple and black with an overlay of rich gold design reminiscent of a snake’s scale, is a fresh take on styling for mythological shows. The shiny material of the outfit creates drapes that beautifully highlight the intricacies of the design, giving it movement and fluidity, mimicking the movement of a snake. Adorned with specially made silver jewelry with the serpent motif, adds intrigue and drama to the costume. The embellished breastplate and lavishly bejeweled crown firmly establish Kadru as the powerful queen that she is while at the same time acknowledging her deviousness.
A modern version of the age old ‘villain’ costume, the creators of this outfit have provided a much-needed update to the way an antagonist is supposed to be.
Parul Chauhan, who plays the role of Kadru superbly, said, “Kadru wants control. She has an extremely powerful personality. At the same time, there’s also a softer side to her, although one rarely gets to see it. The outfit I wear as Kadru is incredibly powerful as it manages to become a part of the character and perfectly reflects her personality. It highlights the darkness within her, while allowing her to shine. The moment I put on the dress; I transform into Kadru. The outfit gives me the confidence to be the powerful woman that Kadru is!”
