Chandigarh, November 17, 2019: A minimally invasive surgery using video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) to remove a tumor which was located inside the chest close to heart and lungs was performed successfully at Alchemist Hospital Panchkula recently.
The surgery was performed by Dr Kanwarneet Singh, consultant surgical oncology.
The 62-yr old male patient who was a chronic smoker for 40-yr have complaint of cough & chest pain from four months. He was diagnosed with Thoracic Neurogenic tumor of size around 10-cm.
The tumor was located inside the chest on right side close to the lungs and heart. VATS and tumor excision was performed and the patient was discharged after 2-day , said Dr Kanwarneet Singh.
He said further that normally these tumors are treated with open thoracotomy surgery which involves long incision over the chest, Painful postoperative course, ICU stay, long stay in hospital and long time to achieve normal life.
In VATS, we use a small incisions and a camera is used to operate. Recovery is very fast and pain is minimal. VATS is a recently developed advanced technique, he informed.
Studies have shown that VATS is superior to traditional techniques in term of pain and patient recovery and is non inferior in oncological outcomes.
