UGC Bestows Panjab University with Category I Status
UGC has notified Panjab University with the highest Category I status, in recognition of its seminal contributions and academic performance. UGC examined the proposal of Panjab University, Chandigarh in its 579th Commission meeting held on16th April 2024 and decided to grade Panjab University, Chandigarh as a Category-l University under its Regulations of Categorisation of Universities for grant of Graded Autonomy], 2018.
Chandigarh, April 30, 2024: UGC has notified Panjab University with the highest Category I status, in recognition of its seminal contributions and academic performance. UGC examined the proposal of Panjab University, Chandigarh in its 579th Commission meeting held on16th April 2024 and decided to grade Panjab University, Chandigarh as a Category-l University under its Regulations of Categorisation of Universities for grant of Graded Autonomy], 2018.
PU joins the elite institutions to have been so recognised by UGC under its mandate of ensuring global excellence by extending autonomy to better-performing institutions for promoting and institutionalizing excellence in higher education.
This status entitles PU to start a new course/programme/department/centre as well as open constituent units/off-campus centres within its geographical jurisdiction, without the approval of the UGC. PU can now also open research parks, incubation centres, university society linkage centres, either on its own or in partnership with private partners, without approval of Commission. PU can now also offer courses in the Open and Distance Learning mode, without approval of the UGC.
Prof Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor has complimented the faculty, students and staff on this achievement and motivated them to continue to perform their societal responsibilities with dedication. She highlighted salient achievements of this academic session of being awarded highest A++ rank by NAAC, marked improvements in the global university rankings of THE, QS as well as innovations.
