CGCians explain the working of the smart walking canes to a few inmates of the Institute for the blind.

Build and donate sensor operated, smart walking canes to the visually impaired

Aiming to utilize their knowledge to make a positive difference in society and serve a social cause, a group of 2nd and 3rd year students pursuing Electronics & Communication engineering (ECE) from CGC Landran created and donated sensor operated, smart walking canes to visually impaired inmates of Institute for The Blind, Sector 26, Chandigarh.

These easy-to-use and efficient walking canes are battery operated, waterproof, are fitted with LED strips and can be used for three days, once charged. The cane is fitted with an ultrasonic sensor for obstacle detection within the range of 80-90 cms. The contraption also has a soil moisture sensor for detection of water (in puddles etc.) on roads etc. It vibrates to intimate the user about any obstacle in their way, helping them navigate with ease and safely.

“The fact that we could bring some cheer and help to make their life a bit easier with this small act, gives us immense satisfaction. It inspires us to do much more for our society, in whatever way we can,” said Anshuman, one of the student members of the group.

This initiative is a part of many such being undertaken by CGCians to celebrate the theme ‘Experience the joy of giving’ of CGC’s upcoming two-day national level, techno cultural fest of CGC Landran on November 15 and 16. The objective is to inspire CGCians to give back to society wholeheartedly, unconditionally through acts of selfless service and gratitude.

Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman, CGC Landran and Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal, President, CGC Landran commended the students for this initiative and underscored the importance of sharing and acts of kindness that go a long way in making the world a better place.
