Urgent need to upgrade STPs and provision of rain water harvesting outlets in mega city of Ludhiana: Dr Thaman


Ludhiana: City-based social activist Dr Satish Kumar Thaman, a resident of Rishi Nagar, Ludhiana has written to CM Punjab Capt Amarinder Singh and LB Minister Brahm Mohindra requesting for urgent need to upgrade sewerage treatment plants (STPs) and provision of rain water harvesting outlets in mega city of Ludhiana consisting of 95 municipal wards. 

Dr Thaman (78) who is also a member to sub division grievances redressal committee, Ludhiana (West) has among other things demanded upgradation of the STPs and provision of rain water harvesting outlets on priority. 

He has also demanded to fix responsibilities of SE (Sewerage) and SDO (Sewerage) Old Courts Ludhiana, to urgently clear blocked sewerage manholes. He has also expressed need to issue directions to the residents of 95 municipal wards to erect / install rain water harvesting points at their respective houses/ kothis/ flats and commercial establishments.

He said field technical staff of MCL must ensure for getting installing rain water harvesting outlets in all lanes / areas and congested areas of all wards with provision of jali for safe flow of rain water. 

He said there is a need to setup coordination committees of the MCL, IT Ludhiana, GLADA/PUDA and Nagar Panchayats for Regular clearance of the sewerage outlets, especially during rainy season and natural rainfall. 

Further, he has also stated that the all the wings of Local Bodies Department must approve site plans/ maps with the condition of compulsory erection of rain water harvesting outlets at the time of start of new constructions and in addition of rain harvesting outlets in old constructions.

He has also demanded that GoI may sanction special funds to State of Punjab to upgrade STPs of mega city of Ludhiana, in case of better maintaining of status of Smart City of Ludhiana. He said there is an urgent need for coordination of all officers of four municipal zones i.e. A,B,C &D for making Ludhiana a Smart City.
