The Directorate of Extension Education of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized a meeting of Horse Breeders of Punjab under the guidance of Dr. Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, Vice-Chancellor for formation of a farmer collective to provide an impetus to horse breeding and sports in the state. Around 40 Horse breeders from all over the state joined this meeting and provided their feedback.

Ludhiana, March 11, 2025: The Directorate of Extension Education of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized a meeting of Horse Breeders of Punjab under the guidance of Dr. Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, Vice-Chancellor for formation of a farmer collective to provide an impetus to horse breeding and sports in the state. Around 40 Horse breeders from all over the state joined this meeting and provided their feedback.

Dr. Gill commended the initiative and pressed on the need for collaborative efforts among breeders and scientists in this direction. He said that horse breeding is engrained in our rural culture and is a source of recreation as well income. The management of horses backed by scientific practices can improve the performance level of horses which would in turn add further value to breeding activities in Punjab. Horse breeding has the potential to boost the state economy if it is organised through a farmer collective with technical support of the university and State Animal Husbandry Department, he added.

Leading the discussion, Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education said that Horse breeds raised by Punjab farmers are recognised throughout the country and prospective buyers and investors prefer the state for purchasing elite animals. He advocated the need for joint efforts to promote Punjab as a breeding state of horses much like dairy animals.

Dr. S S Randhawa, Dean, College of Veterinary Science talked about the importance of health management in horses to complement their breeding. He said that preventive health care plans provide a strong foundation for reproductive management and breeding of horses. Dr. Arun Anand, discussed the facilities extended by the university for treatment of horses. Dr. Yashpal Singh, shared his views on judgement and selection criteria for breeding of horses. A presentation on the avenues of a society of horse breeders was shared by Dr. Prabhjinder Singh and Dr. Arunbeer Singh.
