Chandigarh, November 14, 2024: The University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT & VD) today hosted a vibrant thrift event at the Student Center, Panjab University, Chandigarh, promoting sustainable fashion and raising awareness about the impact of fast fashion. This initiative encouraged students to adopt eco-friendly practices by embracing thrift culture.
In preparation for the event, students from the UIFT department visited various departments across campus, spreading the message of sustainability and the importance of conscious fashion choices. Pre-loved garments were collected from students across the university.
The department’s students conducted meticulous quality checks on each piece. These garments were thoroughly washed, ironed, and prepared for sale, ensuring that all items met a high standard.
On the day of the event, the Student Center was transformed with lively stalls showcasing a wide array of pre-loved items, including T-shirts, shirts, jeans, kurtis, dresses, and tote bags. Each item was affordably priced, allowing students to participate in sustainable fashion without stretching their budgets. The total number of articles available for purchase was 177, including a variety of styles and sizes, making it a truly inclusive event.
In addition to the thrift sale, the event featured engaging games and activities, adding an extra layer of excitement to the experience. These games brought students together, creating a festive atmosphere filled with energy and enthusiasm.
The stalls and activities attracted a large crowd, making the thrift event a memorable gathering for students and faculty alike.
The event was organized by UIFT chairperson Dr. Prabhdip Brar, who supported the initiative by donning an elegant phulkari Baag kaftan, a nod to Punjab’s cultural heritage. Under the invaluable mentorship of Kirti, who demonstrated her commitment to sustainability by wearing a stunning black handmade saree crafted with patchwork techniques using waste fabric squares.
The saree’s pallu was made entirely from these joined squares, highlighting the beauty of upcycled fashion. Ginni, also serving as a faculty coordinator, provided invaluable support in guiding the students and ensuring the event's success.
The event's success was further supported by student coordinators Ishwarpreet and Pratigya, whose dedicated efforts, along with those of other volunteers, ensured a smooth and engaging experience for all attendees.
The event was a success, not only in terms of sales but also in reinforcing a culture of sustainability and mindful fashion choices. This thrift event marked a significant step towards sustainable fashion on campus.
