Vice Chancellor PU appeals to alumnus of University to contribute generously to PU Alumni Endowment Fund

Chandigarh, November 9, 2023: One of the oldest Universities in India, the Panjab University, has a long tradition of pursuing excellence in teaching and research in science and technology, humanities, social sciences, performing arts and sports. The University has produced large number of graduates, post-graduates and doctorates and has distinguished alumni who are leading the way not just in science and technology, but in areas like sports, entrepreneurship, business, finance, politics, and social ventures in India and globally.

As we look forward to the coming decades, it is essential that we build on this success by securing and expanding capacity in a sustainable way, to level up and truly achieve parity with leading universities around the globe, said a release issued by the University.

The PU Alumni Endowment Fund endeavours to involve the alumni of the University to be part of this growth by contributing to the University’s long-term planning, improved quality, access and capacity.The well-established endowment funds of leading US colleges provide up to 30 percent of their operating expenditure. Around 55 per cent of the alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN), have made financial contributions of nearly Rs 70 lakh to the institute during financial year 2022-2023. In 2023, 200 alumni members of graduating batches from 1970 to 2021 from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Bombay have donated Rs.50 crores for the ‘Project Ever Green’ and efforts are on to reach out to past students to scale it up to Rs.100 crores. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Alumni in India and abroad have donated more than USD 2 million towards COVID relief efforts in India that are being coordinated by their Alma Mater.

Panjab University alumni has contributed generously in last few years for expanding or refurbishing the existing infrastructure. For instance, Dr Arvind Verma and Sh Arun Verma of 1966 batch of Chemical Engineering are contributing Rs 3.5 crores to their alma mater.

Prof. Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor Panjab University appeals to the alumnus of the University to contribute generously to the PU Alumni Endowment Fund and to join a prestigious group of donors who share our vision and confidence and playing a key role in shaping the future.

The contribution can be made as General corpus to support the University’s immediate as well as planned needs or for a special purpose such as expanding or refurbishing the existing infrastructure (hostels, labs, teaching departments, sports facilities, common facilities). Some of the buildings of the Panjab University are national heritage and many were made in 1959-1963 which need restoration. Alumni can contribute individually or batch wise or department wise or building wise.

Alumni who make significant contribution to the corpus will be honoured by Vice President during Global Alumni meet scheduled on Dec 23, 2023.
