The campaigning for the elections to the Municipal Corporations, scheduled to be held on December 21, 2024, will officially end on December 19, 2024, at 5 PM. Expectations are running high as leaders from various political parties are leaving no stone unturned. Candidates are engaging in door-to-door campaigns and conducting "nukkad" (street corner) meetings to connect with voters.
Voters, however, remain silent about their preferences, maintaining a shroud of mystery about their choices. Meanwhile, political leaders contesting the elections are vigorously promoting their future plans and programs to attract voters. Political parties have released their poll manifestos, aiming to woo the electorate. Despite this, the voters are yet to reveal any clear indication of their mindset or voting intentions. This time, the elections are set to witness a multi-cornered contest, with major players including the BJP, AAP, Congress, and SAD (B) fielding their candidates.
In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party currently holds power in the state government and has three Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. The BJP, while ruling at the center, does not have a single MP from Punjab in the Lok Sabha. On the other hand, the Congress boasts the highest number of MPs from Punjab, with seven members. SAD (B) has only one MP, while two independent MPs also represent Punjab.
The BJP is optimistic about increasing its tally in all five Municipal Corporations, while the Congress had secured the highest number of councilors in these corporations during the 2018 elections. SAD (B) also had representation in these Municipal Corporations, and the Aam Aadmi Party is eager to demonstrate its growing strength.
The results of these Municipal Corporation elections are expected to significantly impact the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi, slated for early 2025.
