“We all have the power to break free from our own cages”: Bhoomika Meena shares the key message she hopes audiences take away from Amazon MX Player’s Chidiya Udd
Mumbai, January 27, 2025: Amazon MX Player, Amazon's free video streaming service, recently released the crime-thriller drama, Chidiya Udd. Based on Aabid Surti’s novel, Cages, the series follows Sehar, a 20-year-old Rajasthani girl whose dreams of a better life in Mumbai get thwarted by unforeseen challenges. Her dedication and determination are tested to the limit when she finds herself caught in the city's criminal underbelly and is forced to confront the harsh realities of the red-light district. Faced with gang battles and a dangerous society, Sehar must navigate several unexpected twists and turns in order to defend her dreams, her loved ones, and her very existence. Chidiya Udd features legendary Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff, along with Bhoomika Meena and Sikandar Kher in pivotal roles.
Sharing insights into her approach to bringing Seher to life in the series, Bhoomika says, “I approached Seher by looking beyond her surface labels. Yes, she’s a sex worker in a grim reality, but she’s also a free-spirited, empathetic woman with her own code. I spent time researching and talking to people with similar experiences, but I also pulled from my own life—growing up in rural Rajasthan, studying in a top school, and meeting countless individuals during my MBBS days. All those varied experiences helped me capture Seher’s resilience and emotional depth. I wanted her to feel fully human—someone who’s not just surviving but actively defining herself on her own terms. I hope viewers see Seher’s fearlessness and realize that if a girl from a small village can stand tall before underworld dons and still ‘fly,’ we all have the power to break free from our own cages. The purity of her heart, the fire in her belly, and the faith in her mother’s blessings are her core strengths, and I hope people imbibe that in their lives too.” She adds, “I believe Chidiya Udd broadens the conversation around crime dramas by putting a girl at the forefront against a powerhouse of men. Kudos to our makers for doing that. This itself makes a huge statement.”
Bhoomika also reveals what preparation went behind sinking her teeth into the character, saying, “Seher isn’t initially aware of the crime syndicates—it’s an unforeseen challenge that disrupts her life. I focused on how she navigates the unknown. In many ways, it mirrored my own journey: moving to Mumbai alone after MBBS, unsure of what lay ahead. Each time I faced a setback, it felt like God was preparing me for something bigger—much like Seher, who finds herself in a world she never imagined. Even though my mother wasn’t initially supportive of my passion, I felt her blessings were always with me and believed that one day, she’d understand how much this dream mattered to me. Looking back, every obstacle was a stepping stone, reinforcing my faith and resilience. That’s what I channelled into Seher, a belief that unforeseen challenges strengthen you for the opportunities yet to come.”
