Chandigarh: The Department of Library and Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised twenty-one webinars from 24th April-29th June 2020 on the theme ‘Information Generation, Dissemination and Use during COVID-19 lockdown’. In the webinar series, eminent speakers from India and abroad deliberated on various issues from information to misinformation and disinformation generation/dissemination.About 5000 attendees participated in the webinar series. In the concluding webinar on the evening of 29th June 2020, Dr.Naresh Kumar Agarwal, Associate Professor, School of Library & Information Science, Simmons University, Boston, USA delivered a talk on “Disinformation Generation, Dissemination and Use: COVID 19 and Beyond”. He differentiated amongst information, misinformation and disinformation and highlighted how disinformation is generated, how it spreads, what critical thinking skills one must have to differentiate between fact and fake news.
Prof.Preeti Mahajan, chairperson of the department, welcomed the speaker as well as the attendees and introduced the aim of the webinar series. Prof. Rupak Chakravarty delivered the Vote of Thanks. More than 250 attendees including LIS academicians, professionals, researchers and students from India and abroad participated in the last webinar. The entire series were highly appreciated by the speakers as well as by the attendees.
