Week long FDP organized by HRDC on theme ‘Understanding Geodiversity and Geoheritage’ concludes
Chandigarh, March 1, 2022: The seven-day Faculty Development Program organized by HRDC, Panjab University, on the theme ‘Understanding Geodiversity and Geoheritage’ concluded today. The course helped in laying a sound foundation for sensitizing both geologists and non-geologists towards basic concepts of geodiversity and geo heritage. With 30 participants from different disciplines including geology, English, social work, mass communication, geography, to name a few; the Faculty Development Program was designed in a format by Dr. Gurmeet Kaur, course coordinator that brought the diverse disciplines together.
The valedictory address of the program was delivered by Padma Shri Prof. Harsh Gupta, eminent and highly decorated scientist, NSAI Platinum Jubliee Fellow, Member, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, India, Past President, International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), President Geological Society of India. Prof. Gupta spoke on the relevance of preparedness and geological phenomenon. He drew examples from contemporary events and explained how being prepared for natural phenomenon like earthquakes reduced the damage to life and property drastically.
The high point of the course was the richly experienced resource persons who included academicians, professionals from the industry and even authors who provided their perspective on diverse topics ranging from ‘Geodiversity all around us’ to ‘Nation Building Through Citizen Scientists’, ‘Geoethics in Geo heritage’, ‘Geo Heritage in Indian Context’ & ‘Geotourism’. The choice of session topics helped the participants develop a sound understanding of not only the concepts of Geodiversity and Geoheritage but also gain a deeper context which can help understand the relevance of creating awareness about the theme.
