Ferozepur, November 1, 2012:  The Education Department has tightened its waistband to stop flowing of sixth river of drugs in Punjab by celebrating Drug Abuse Day on November 19 and 20, in all the government, aided, affiliated and private schools and colleges in the Punjab under directions of Sikandar Singh Malooka, Education Minister, Punjab and Kahan Singh Pannu, Director General (Secondary Education).

As the young generation of Punjab is getting addicted to the menace of drugs, state government has also decided to introduce the subject of drug de-addiction in school curriculum. State Education Department in its latest directive has directed drug de-addiction will be an integral part of the school curriculum.

 

Jaswant Singh Gill, president, Raj Kishore Kalra, patron, state spokesman Hans Raj and Sukhchain Singh of Education Reforms Committee (ERC), Punjab appreciating the initiative taken by the Education Department of Punjab, said to eradicate the social evils like drug abuse from the society, the action was necessary and all members of Education Reforms Committee would ensure to make the campaign a grand success.  DGSE Kahan Singh Pannu had also written to Director, Panchayati Raj and Principle Higher Education to make drug abuse campaign success.

As per the programme, in the morning assembly on November 19, doctors, intellectuals, sarpanches and other social activists will deliver lectures  against drug abuse with the assistance of school/college heads besides organising poster, poetry, essay and declamation competitions and this process will continue on the next day also.

On November 20, rallies on drug abuse would also be organised in which school management committee members, panchayat members and NGOs will participate. 

This programme will be of two hours from 9 am to 11 am and for rest of the time, the school will function normally.
