WORKSHOP: 2-day Census data dissemination workshop concludes

Chandigarh, December 28, 2012: A two day Census Data Dissemination workshop has organized as part of the efforts to sensitize data users about the availability and use of latest Census 2011 results on Housing, Household Amenities and Assets. The first day focused on the analysis of House listing and Housing Census data of Census 2011. On the second day of the Census Data Dissemination workshop titled “Punjab-The growth story from Census 2001 to 2011, the participants were given training on the Census info India version 2.0 software module developed by United Nations Statistics Division in partnership with UNICEF and UNFPA. This database software has been developed with the cooperation of the UN system and the product has been adopted from UNICEF Child info technology.

Census info India is a database that provides a method to organize, store and display data in a uniform format to facilitate Census data sharing at the national level across government departments and UN agencies using the same system. This software is a data dissemination tool for data analysis. In this software an animated dashboard giving a single view consolidated report on Census reports has been developed using Dev Info data base technology. Users can view selected indicators in animated and interactive tables, graphs and maps.

UNIFCEF is supporting the Government of India in the Census info 2011 Dashboard initiative with the objective of making the latest census data more accessible to all stakeholders in a user-friendly manner, thereby promoting greater use of data for development.

Addressing the workshop, Seema Jain, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India and Director Census, Punjab said that the software can perform multiple functions and advised the participants to make the best use of this software in their departmental work. Smt Jain also released a Census publication  ‘Administrative Atlas, Punjab 2011’ at this occasion. This Atlas portrays administrative divisions as they existed at the time of Census 1951 to 2011.

In this two days workshop, presentations based on Housing data of Census 2011 were made by K.S. Bhatnagar, Joint Director, Bhagirath Singh and Madhav Shyam, Deputy Directors, C.K. Dutta and Rajindra Prashad, Assistant Directors. Training to participants on software was given by Sh. BB Jain, Research Officer.
