Amritsar, March 18, 2015: A "Workshop on the Use of Latest Scientific Instruments (NMR, LCMS, SEM) was inaugurated today at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, (formerly known as Academic Staff College) of Guru Nanak Dev University. As many as 32 teachers and budding Research Scholars pertaining to various faculties of science are participating in it.

Dr. Mandar V. Deshmukh, Sr. Scientist, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Deshmukh in his inaugural address motivated the audience to pursue their research in the respective discipline with utmost zeal, devotion and dedication. Throwing light on the ever increasing effect of science on our daily life, he said that the advancements in the field of science and technology had entirely transformed the human life. All this would not have been possible at all, but for the hard work put in by the scientists all over the world over a period of time, he emphasised. He concluded his address by saying that science is the only discipline, which transcends geographical, physical, social, economical barriers.

Renu Bhardwaj, Deptt. of Botanical & Environmental Sciences of University and Coordinator of the Workshop highlighted the significance of such Workshops for the Research Scholars in the present era of interdisciplinary approach. She briefed the participants about the thrust area of the Workshop, which she said was to apprise the participants with the latest scientific instruments such as NMR, LCMS, SEM etc., which have been installed in the Emerging Life Sciences Block of our university by the efforts of our visionary, dynamic Vice-Chancellor  Prof. A.S. Brar, who himself is an eminent scientist.

Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Director, Human Resource Development Centre briefed the history of the Academic Staff Colleges (now known as Human Resource Development Centre as per XII Plan Guidelines of the University Grants Commission). Needless to say that the role of these Centres has been appreciated by all sitting in the helms of affairs of higher education in India, she further said. Earlier the Chief Guest was accorded a floral welcome by Prof. Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Prof. Renu Bhardwaj and Dr. Mohan Kumar. Dr. Satwinderjit Kaur, Head, Department of Botanical & Environmental Sciences, GNDU, Amritsar proposed the vote of thanks. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
