Ludhiana, August 7, 2019: World Breast Feeding week was celebrated from 1st Aug to 7th Aug 2019 at Christian Medical College (CMC) to highlight the importance of Breast Feeding in Newborns & young infants for their Growth & Development and to prevent infections.

On this occasion a poster making, slogan writing competition and Role play was organized based on the theme “empower parents, enable breast feeding” by Paediatric Medicine and College of Nursing, Paediatric Nursing Department in A.N.C OPD, Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana. The judges for the poster making and slogan writing competition were Dr.Varghese P.V, Paediatric Medicine Deptt, Seema Barnabas, Professor, College of Nursing, Dr. Merlyn Grace, Paediatric Medicine Department and Prem lata Prakash, Assoc. Prof, College of Nursing.

The winners of poster making competition were 1st - Akansha, 2nd – Anu Rajan , 3rd - Blessy and winners of slogan writing competition were 1st- Mahima William, 2nd - Amandeep and 3rd – Ashish. Dr.Gurmeet Kaur, Unit Head,Paediatric Medicine deptt unfolded the Theme and stressed upon Exclusive Breast feeding to Newborn upto 6 months of age and avoidance of cow’s milk and Bottle Feeding. Dr. Kavita Bhatti, HOD, Obstetrics and Gynaecology spoke on importance of Breast Feeding.

Premlata Prakash, Associate Prof, College of Nursing gave talk on Myths related to Breast Feeding. Dr. Merlyn Grace talked about Techniques of Breast Feeding along with that Mrs. Jatinder, clinical instructor and Mrs. Elizabeth, Sister incharge, gave demonstration on the same topic. Video assisted teaching was given on Exclusive Breast Feeding by Mrs. Richa Justin Hans, Assistant Prof. and Pediatrics Nursing department
Premlata Prakash, Assoc. Prof, College of Nursing proposed the vote of thanks, especially to Paediatric Medicine Department, Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department, faculty of Paediatric Nursing department, Nursing students and Ludhiana Academy of Paediatrics for sponsoring the program. The program activities were highly appreciated by Dr. Gurmeet Kaur, Unit Head, Paediatric Medicine Deptt and Dr. Reena Jairus, Principal, College of Nursing. The mothers visiting A.N.C OPD and their relatives attended the program actively & participated in all the activities.

Meanwhile, the day was also observed at Health & Wellness Centre, Jamalpur, Ludhiana on the theme “Empower parents Enable Breastfeeding”. The Chief Guest for this occasion was Dr. Poonam Goyal, Senior Medical Officer, Sahnewal and Guest of Honour - Sardar Pal Singh Grewal, Councilor, Jamalpur.

Sanjeet Johnson (Associate Professor), Nisha Singh (Clinical Instructor) and Bhawna (Demonstrator) conducted the Programme under the guidance of Dr. Reena Jairus (Professor & Principal) and Prof. (Mrs.) Glory Samuel (Vice Principal & HOD of Community Health Nursing, College of Nursing, CMC, Ludhiana. General public was the audience.

The Programme was organized in collaboration with Shalini – Community Health Officer, Asha Workers & MPHW of Health & Wellness Centre, Jamalpur. Dr. Poonam Goyal expressed her views regarding the importance of Breastfeeding. Mr. Sanjeet Johnson unfolded the theme and emphasized on Breastfeeding and its advantages. It is important for the mother to Breastfeed the baby for exclusively six months. Honey, water, cow’s milk should not be given to the babies. Breast feeding also helps to strengthen the bond with children. GNM Interns (Batch 2016) performed Nukkad Natak and also displayed posters regarding importance Breastfeeding which were appreciated by the audience.
