Ludhiana: World Diabetes Day is on 14th November 2020 –Diwali –the Festival of Lights. Diabetes can make you lose your sight by damaging the back of the eye –the RETINA which can be compared to the film of the camera said Dr. Sumeet Chopra, Professor & Head, Eye Department, DMC & Hospital, Ludhiana and Vitreoretinal Surgeon. Dr. Sumeet Chopra has trained at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai for 7 years, India’s premier Retina Centre. Diabetic Retinopathy affects 1 in 3 patients of diabetes and is the leading cause of blindness in working aged adults. But that can be prevented by taking good care of diabetes with medicines, lifestyle modifications, increased physical activity and dietary changes.
According to Dr Sumeet Chopra regular check up of the retina of all diabetic patients needs to be done. Treatment options for Diabetic Retinopathy include Green Laser, Anti VEG-F Injection and MIVS-Microincision Vitreoretinal Surgery.
According to Mr. Prem Gupta, Secretary, DMCH, our Hospital is well equipped to manage patients having damage to retina because of diabetes with Fundus Fluroscein Angiography (Zeiss, Germany), High Definition OCT (Zeiss Germany) and Oertli Faros (Swiss) Vitrectomy Machine. All diabetic patients should get periodic screening of their Retina by a Retina Specialist.
