World Environment Day celebrated at PAU
The Department of Extension Education & Communication Management, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has kept its efforts to focus on providing solutions to plastic pollution in consonance with the spirit of the World Environment Day, held annually on June 5.
Ludhiana, May 31, 2023: The Department of Extension Education & Communication Management, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has kept its efforts to focus on providing solutions to plastic pollution in consonance with the spirit of the World Environment Day, held annually on June 5.
World Environment Day, the largest global platform for environmental public outreach, emphasizes “One Earth” and the significance of keeping it clean and green. The Department of Extension Education & Communication Management organized multiple activities under ‘Mission Lifestyle for Environment’ (LiFE) here today, with an aim to raise awareness among students about environmental issues, the increasingly deteriorating climate conditions etc. The event was organized under the mentorship of Dean, College of Community Science, Dr Kiranjot Sidhu, who stressed that plastic pollution is choking the earth; and each little step towards the avoidance of plastic pollution, matters. She further exhorted the audience to realize that it’s time to accelerate positive actions against plastic indulgence and transit towards a circular economy.
While discussing the theme of World Environment Day 2023 i.e. “Beat Plastic Pollution”, Dr. Sukhdeep Kaur, Assistant Professor, apprised the students about the disadvantages of using plastic and suggested various eco-friendly practices to avoid its use, and save environment. She also explained various methods to conserve water and energy at the domestic and household level.
Dr Mandeep Sharma, Assistant Professor, deliberated on the importance of tree plantation and remarked that tree plantation drives combat many environmental issues like deforestation, erosion of soil, global warming; thereby, enhancing the beauty and balance of the environment. She also mobilized students for initiating tree plantation drives.
Taking the campaign further, competitions on poster making, quiz, debate, etc. were conducted in different Government schools of Block Gill, Ludhiana, to further sensitise the young on the glaring faux pas commonly committed as far as conservation of environment vitality is concerned. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions. Nearly 500 students and school teachers participated in the mega event.
