World investor week campaign on investor education and protection

Chandigarh: The PG Department of Commerce & Management of PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar celebrated the Investor Awareness Week in collaboration with IOSCO (International Organization of Securities Commission) on investor education and protection. IOSCO is the international body that brings together the world’s securities regulations and is recognized as the global standard setter for the securities sector. It develops, implements and promotes adherence to internationally recognized standards for securities regulation.

The resource person for the session was Mr. Kawaljit Singh, Founder and CEO at Proftrain Mentors, Mohali, Punjab. Mr. Singh is an expert in the fields of Wealth Management, Financial Advisory, Financial Planning and Retirement Planning. He has vast experience in academics as well as practical field.

During the session Mr. Singh explained various aspects related to the financial markets and their working. He emphasized on financial discipline in life where he elaborated that Income Expenditure is not savings rather Income – Savings = Expenditure.

He further emphasized that the youth must start their investments by taking a term insurance, Medical Insurance and SIP scheme continuously for 10 years. He very lucidly described the financial market instruments including shares, debentures, commodities, derivatives and Mutual Funds. The procedure to buy these securities was also elaborated. An indepth insight was also provided on how one should make financial decisions considering risk and returns on different instruments and make investment in a diversified portfolio. He also explained the grievance redressal mechanism for investors. The session was concluded with a question/answer round by the audience followed by a note of thanks by Mr. Singh for Principal Madam Dr. Kiran Arora and Mrs. Alka Sharma, Head, Department of Commerce for giving an opportunity to organize the session.
The seminar that was conducted on the online platform ‘Go to Meetings’ was attended by all the faculty members and around 140 students of the PG Department of Commerce & Management.

Overall the session was a learning experience for the students with a practical insight. Principal Dr.(Mrs.) Kiran Arora appreciated the efforts of the department for organizing such sessions.
