World Soil Day celebrated
Nauni, December 6, 2021: World Soil Day was celebrated by the Department of Soil Science and Water Management, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni on Sunday. World Soil Day is observed every year to raise awareness about the importance of soil, healthy ecosystems and human well-being to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources.
The event was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Dr Parvinder Kaushal who emphasized on the need to conserve soil and environment on priority basis for sustained crop productivity. He said that there was a need to focus on management of soil salinity in order to boost soil productivity which is also the theme of ‘World Soil Day’ for the current year.
Dr JC Sharma, Prof. and Head, Department of Soil Science and Water Management, spoke on understanding and mitigation strategies for problem soils. He further said that judicious use of fertilizers was necessary for providing the growing population with safe, healthy and nutritious food, carbon sequestration and promoting agricultural production and poverty alleviation.
Dr ML Verma, Principal Scientist (Soil Science) gave an expert lecture on the importance of soil testing and plant analysis as there is a strong relationship between the nutrient levels in soil and in plant tissue. Soil testing complemented by plant analysis helps to identify nutrient deficiencies and imbalances which allows farmers to more effectively tailor their nutrient management programs to meet a crop's specific need.
Dr Ravinder Sharma, Director of Research, Dr DD Sharma Dean College of Horticulture & Forestry, Thunag (Mandi), Heads of the departments of College of Forestry, faculty and students of Department of Soil Science & Water Management attended the event.
