World Wetlands Day Celebrated at Govt. Home Science College
Chandigarh, February 1, 2025: Govt. Home Science college celebrated World Wetlands Day on 01 February 2025. The theme for the year ‘Protect Wetlands for Our Future’ underscores the urgency of bold action to protect these natural habitats for the welfare of all people – and so future generations can continue to benefit from all that wetlands provide. The Environment Society ‘Harita’ conducted a awareness lecture on the campus for the faculty, staff members and students, to reaffirm our commitment to protecting the environment, promoting sustainability and ensuring a healthier and more resilient future for all life on Earth. The objective of the event was to educate students on the importance of wetlands, their role in maintaining ecological balance, and the urgent need for their conservation. World Wetlands Day which is celebrated on 2nd February annually marks the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands held on February 2nd 1971. It is celebrated to raise awareness among all sections of the society about values and functions of wetlands, utilization of their resources and their environmental importance. Students were given in-depth insights into the functions of wetlands, including water filtration, biodiversity support, and climate regulation. The speaker stressed the detrimental impact of human activities, such as pollution, deforestation, and urbanization, on wetland ecosystems. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, reiterated the importance of raising awareness about wetland conservation. She emphasized that such events serve as a platform to educate, engage, and inspire individuals to take meaningful actions toward preserving these crucial ecosystems.
