Chandigarh, January 22, 2014: The Punjab Government has taken strict measures to check entry & usage of mobile phones, drugs and other prohibited gadgets in jails. For this an extra force from Punjab Ex-Servicemen, Home Guards and Punjab Police of about 1100 persons has been deployed for this purpose. This has resulted in more checking and recovery of prohibited items from the prisoners.  

Disclosing this here today, Sarwan Singh Phillaur Jails Minister Punjab said that with the deployment of extra security persons number of surprise & routine checking is increased which is showing good results. He said that during the month of December 36 various drugs 68 mobile phones have been recovered from the prisoners in jails.

He said that jail authorities are also strictly instructed that in addition to this action would also be taken against the persons showing laxity in their duty in allowing entry of prohibited items into the jail premises.  

Phillaur said that to stop the entry of prohibited gadgets into the jail premises X-Ray machines and Metal detectors are being installed in the jails. He added that mobile jammers have already been installed at Nabha and Sangrur and jammers are also being installed at Gurdaspur jail. He further said that Punjab Government is in a process to install mobile jammers in all the jails in the state.

Minister said that more funds are being provided to the jail authorities to provide better medical & Security facilities in the jails. To overcome the problem of overcrowding in jails 5 new jails are being built in the state which would help in providing better security and facilities to the prisoners, ‘said Phillaur’.

Minister said that he has personally checked some jails but now he has planned to check all the jails of the state in the coming days therefore all the things should be put in place before his visit starts.
